Assessment criteria
General grants
In the event that applications for grants exceed the funds available, the following scoring system will be used to allocate awards.
Scoring System for Grants
- 2 points for subject area: outbreak investigations, surveillance, quantitative studies, etc.
- 1 point for subject area: policy, microbiology, qualitative studies, etc.
- 2 points for oral presentation
- 1 point for poster presentation
- 3 points for country of origin of presenting author: low, lower-middle or upper-middle income country as defined by World Bank 2010
- 2 points for country of origin of presenting author (other than outreach countries): EU or EU accession country (except Portugal – See: Gulbenkian foundation grants below)
- 1 point for country of origin of presenting author (other than outreach countries): other country not mentioned above.
- 2 points in addition if the country of origin is one of those targeted by the outreach project (see Annex I)
Applicants with the highest number of points will be given preference if there are more applicants than grants. The country of presenter is defined as the country specified in the affiliation given for that author in the abstract.
In evaluating the applications the committee will also consider if all the applying countries are represented in the assignment of grants.
Gulbenkian foundation grants
These grants are available to presenters whose affiliation for the abstract authorship purpose is Portugal. If there are more applicants than grants available, the first 4 points of the above scoring system for grants (subject area, type of presentation) will apply. Portuguese applications will automatically use this source for the travel grants.
